Triangle Pose

Triangle Pose (Trikonasana)

This is one of those simple poses one can just enjoy and enjoy.

Start with the legs spread so they are in a triangle, and the arms outstretched to the side.

Fold the waist sideways and just ‘fall’ into the pose.

This is a great pose because it is a light stretch on the legs, massages the inner organs gently, and yet all you are doing is looking upward at the sky, enjoying the new perspective.

While one can stay in this pose for long periods of time, it is also very fun to do a simple routine with it.

Fold right, stand up, fold left, stand up, and so on.

One can also create routines with the revolving triangle pose, the warriors pose, the side angle pose, and so on.

Honestly, this is one of those poses that is an end in itself, or can be used to translate oneself into ever more complex and fun poses.

One thing one hears is the old saying, a long muscle is a strong muscle. Now, the length of the muscle isn’t important, what is important is to be able to be flexible, and to have the muscle stretch easily so that you have the most body potential you can have.

The Triangle Pose not only has massive amounts of easy variations, it stretches the thighs, knees, ankles, hips, groin, hamstring calves, shoulders and spin. It stretches just about everything, and in so doing it releives stress and aids digestion and helps one deal with such ailments as flat feet, neck pain, sciatica, and a lot of other things.

Avoid doing this pose if you have a headache, low blood pressure, or a heart condition. If you have high blood pressure you should be gazing downward. If you have neck problems find a variation with the neck in a more comfortable, less stressful position (looking forward, angling the shoulders differently, etc.)

A good variation, sometimes in the event of neck pain, is to point the upper arm parallel to the floor.

If you have trouble touching the floor, place the hand upon a block in the beginning.
